The Third Commandment:

"Remember to keep holy (to set apart) the Sabbath Day"

As Catholics, we are called to observe all Sundays and specific feast days as Holy Days of Obligation. These are days in the Church calendar when we are meant to set apart time for God by attending Mass and spending more time in prayerful, contemplative rest than we would on any other normal day. In addition to Sundays, Canada’s only two Holy Days of Obligation are Christmas (either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day) and the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day.

Our human nature has a tendency towards making our daily work the focus of our lives, sometimes to the point where our jobs and other activities take precedence over our relationship with God and the spiritual work that we need to do to prepare for eternal life with Him. Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation are the days we set apart from all other days to keep God at the center of our lives and to develop our faith.

Father Robert's Installation as Pastor of Saint Thomas More

Last Saturday the Episcopal Vicar, Father Raymond Lafontaine, came to celebrate Mass and install Father Robert as our pastor. Thank you to all parishioners who came to support Father Robert's vocation and mission amongst us, and to all who showed their support from home through their prayers!

Special thanks to John Davidson for the photograph!

To our parishioners who have not yet returned due to the pandemic:

We miss you!

Many thanks to our volunteers for our recent Advent Call-Around, which has helped us stay in touch with our parishioners who haven't been able to rejoin us yet at the parish for Mass and other activities.

If you a parishioner who has not yet returned due to the pandemic and did not receive a call, please email Angela at pa.englishparishes.verdun@gmail.com or call the parish office.

As he did last year, Fr Robert is happy to bring Communion to any parishioners who are unable to rejoin us at the church, and to hear Confessions at your front doors. Call the parish office if you would like a home visit!

This evocative 16th century prayer is offered daily at every mass during Advent in the Catholic Ordinariate Rite

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness,

and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life,

in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility;

that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty,

to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal;

through him who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and ever.

Amen.
